Does anyone remember a story about a man who claimed the world was going to end??

I think the story grew when someone posted it up on the internet. I can recall few details but I think he said the world would end on a certain date and the only way to escape death is to flee with him on his spaceship. The only catch was you had to commit suicide at a certain time and he would pick you up in the afterworld at some location. Anyone know what the guy's name was who was supposedly going to stop by in a spaceship to pick you up??
